Book review: Scarlet

Title: Scarlet
Series: The Lunar Chronicles #2
Author: Marissa Meyer
Release date: February 2013
Genre: Science Fiction
Pages: 464 pages

Expectations
I really enjoyed reading Cinder & I'm looking forward to see how this story continues. I've heard that the stories of all the characters will intertwine, and I really like that idea!

Review of Cinder

Review
Scarlet is loosely based on Little red riding hood.

I loved the fact that Scarlet is French. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a really good job with all the accents, including this one!

In this book we get to meet a lot of great characters. Thorne is definitely one of my favorites! He is such a great character. He is funny, charming, full of himself and loyal. He is hilarious! I laughed out loud a couple of times!

I really liked the interactions between Thorne and Cinder. So funny!

Scarlet is a nice character, she is feisty (with her gun ;p) but I missed really getting to know her. It felt like all we really got to see from her was her worrying about her grandmother and her interactions with Wolf. Maybe this will come later :)

Some parts dragged on a bit, especially the parts were Scarlet was trying to find her grandmother.

Can we just adore Iko for a moment. She was so disapointed when she discovered she was a ship! She is so much fun to read about.

I really loved the intertwining of the stories! Marissa Meyer did a great job with this!

I'm really curious to see what Cress is all about! So excited to read that one!

Book review: Cinder

Title: Cinder
Series: The Lunar Chronicles #1
Author: Marissa Meyer
Release date: January 2012
Genre: Science Fiction
Pages: 395 pages

Expectations

I've heard a lot of great things about The Lunar Chronicles. This series is loosely based on fairytales.

Review

I really enjoyed reading this! I especially loved listening to the audiobook!

The story takes place in the future, where Cyborgs and Androids are part of society. Everyone is looking for a cure to the plague, brought to earth by the Lunars, the people who live on the moon! Lunars are ruled by their Queen Levana, who can manipulate almost everyone to get what she wants.

Cinder is loosely based on Cinderella. With the emphasis on loosely, because Cinder is a kick-ass main-character. She is a cyborg & a very likable character. I was pleasantly surprised when she wasn't portrayed as a girly girl!
Also, she's a mechanic, and a very good one too.

Cinder lives with her stepmom and two stepsisters. I loved that one of the stepsisters was actually kind to Cinder! In the beginning, the stepmother and other stepsister tollerated Cinder, but as the story continues, they treated her very poorly.

Now let's talk about Kai. Marissa Meyer did for sure turn the prince into a very charming, cute, caring, funny and kind person. I loved him!

This futuristic world was very well developed and therefore easy to follow. Characters were very well described. This wasn't a cute, fairytale kind of story, which was one of the reasons why I liked it so much. The writer really tried not to be very cliché, and I think she succeeded!

The only problem I had with this book was that the big plottwist was very predictable.

I would really recommend reading or listening to this book! I've heard that the following books also intertwine the stories of previous characters, really love that idea. I can't wait to read the rest of this series!

I'll rate it 4.5 stars!

Expectations
I'm curious to see how this story will continue.

Review

This book entails the mission of our gang trying to save Jace. Clary decides to follow Jace to try to discover what Sebastian(Jonathan)'s plan is. She also gets to know her brother a bit more, which is very weird for her. She finds him very hard to read. What is real and what isn't ?
Meanwhile the rest tries to come up with a plan to break the bond between Jace and Jonathan without killing Jace.

The beginning of the book was similar to the fourth book, City of Fallen Angels. It was enjoyable, but not very spectacular and very slow.  However, the last part was so fun to read, action packed and very suspenseful!

My love for Simon and Izzy is growing more and more! They are such an awesome couple.

I also liked Clary (most of the time), her character has really developed and she is much more mature now. Although she still makes some stupid decisions now and then..

I'm reading the last book, can't wait to see how this series is going to end!

I'll rate it 3.5 stars.

Book review: Harry potter and the Cursed Child!

Title: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
Author: J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany & Jack Thorne
Series: The '8th' Harry Potter book ( not really though)
Release date: July 31st 2016
Genre: YA fantasy
Pages: 327 pages

Expectations

I cannot tell you how excited I was when I first heard this would be a real thing! I read it the day it came out (just writing a late review..)

Review

First of all, I think we should really look at this play as a separate book, not as the 8th Harry Potter book. It is a totally different book, not a continuation of the story.

Because of the script-form of writing, it reads very different. I felt like big chunks of information were missing, but maybe that's just because I'm not used to reading a script.

So ,besides from the different format, what did I think of this story?

Characters were not themselves. Ron was just added for comic relief, Hermione was strange and Harry would have never said what he said to his son Albus. Draco was described the most realistically from all old characters.

Scorpius was by far my favorite character! So sweet, so funny & a really good friend to Albus. I also liked the friendship between them.

The use of the time turner was interesting, as well as the alternate realities they created ( I was secretely hoping for a Hermione & Draco relationship in one of the alternate realities..)

Also, the were a lot of plot holes!

I'm very curious to know how they will actually perform this play on stage, knowing there are a lot of magical elements described.

It was an enjoyable read, but not comparable to the rest of the series. Maybe I also had unrealistically high expectations.

Rating

I'll give it 2,5 (maybe 3) stars.

Book review: City of Fallen Angels

Title: City of Fallen Angels
Author: Cassandra Clare
Series: The Mortal Instruments #4
Release date: April 2011
Genre: YA Fantasy
Pages: 424

Previous books in this series
#1 City of Bones
#2 City of Ashes
#3 City of Glass

Expectations
I don't really know what to expect in this book, especially because this series started out as a trilogy, and later became a series. I really enjoyed City of Glass so we will see.

Review
I enjoyed reading this book, although I still prefer The Infernal Devices.

Not much happened during the first part of the book, the storylines were somewhat slow. After that the pace got a bit better.

I really love that Cassandra Clare has tried to connect the Mortal Insturments with The Infernal Devices. It was a lot of fun reading little details about characters we know from the Infernal Devices.

I would have liked to see more of Magnus and Alec. And not just about Alec being moody because of his insecurities. I liked Izzy and Simon, as Always. Simon is such a great character to read about. It was so sad to see how is mother reacted.. Izzy is ons of my favorite characters in this series. I really ship them too :)

Jace is really trying to grow as a person, but a lot of things make that impossible for him. I really felt sorry for him. He was really trying.

Clary is (finally) kind of growing on me. She is less annoying and a bit more realistic. She is growing up. She still makes some reckless decisions, but at least she tells someone (that's progress).

I also liked that we got to see a bit more of Maia. We also got introduced to Jordan, which is a likable guy.

The ending was really sneaky!
Just when you think everything is going to be alright, you read the last two pages.. fortunately I already own the fifth book so I can start reading that soon!

Although this was a fun read, it wasn't the best Cassandra Clare book, and definitely not my favorite book in The Mortal Instruments. Quite a lot of parts were dragging on and the pace was a bit slow. I'm curious to see what the next book will bring!

Rating

I'll rate it 3.5 stars

Book review: Clockwork Princess!

Title: Clockwork Princess
Author: Cassandra Clare
Series: The Infernal Devices #3

Release date: september 2013
Genre: YA fantasy
Pages: 567

Previous books in this trilogy:
Clockwork Angel
Clockwork Prince

Expectations
I've loved the first two books and heard nothing but good things about the finale of this trilogy.

Review
One of the best last books in a trilogy I've ever read! Such an amazing conclusion. I'm really going to miss these characters, all of them.. This is definitely the best love-triangle I've read about!

I don't think there was one boring moment in this book. Lots of times I was really scared that favorite characters were going to die! The problem with this book is that I don't have a couple of favorite characters, I have A LOT. Of course loved (and still do) Tessa, Will and Jem. But I also really loved Charlotte, Henry, Sophie,  Cecily ,Magnus, and even the Lightwood brothers!

Loved everything about this trilogy, my heart melted.  I couldn't imagine how this epic story was going to end, but after reading this, I think Cassandra Clare created a perfect ending to an already awesome trilogy.

If I'll have to pick a favorite part of the book, it would definitely be the epilogue. Wow, that was such an epic epilogue, so emotional.

Cassandra Clare's writing is amazing, you can really notice that her writing progresses the more books she has written. I really love that she writes all her books in the shadowhunter world and that she created overlap within those stories. It makes the stories even more interesting.

I'm curious to see how this story will intertwine with The Mortal Instruments series. I've read the first three books and I'm excited to read the last three. After finishing Clockwork Princess I started rereading City of Bones, City of Ashes and I'm currently rereading City of Glass. It's so much fun to discover little hints that connect the books with The Infernal Devices that I didn't see before!
